Have you ever wondered why many so many teachers are leaving
Has it occurred to you that the state of
West Virginia’s teacher salaries are not competitive because the West Virginia Law states that the base salary of teachers has to be the same across the state.
That means that
*DID YOU KNOW THAT YOUR CHILD'S TEACHER MAY NOT BE CERTIFIED?...During the 2006-07 school year, 1 out of every 5 teachers was NOT certified in the state of West Virginia!
*West Virginia Salaries are the 3rd lowest in the country!! In 1992, West Virginia ranked 30th in the nation for teacher salary. In 2007, we have fallen to 47th!
*EVER WONDER WHERE THE MONEY GOES?...Because of the 40 year payment plan to repay the teacher retirement, the state spends 47% on education, however, only 39.9% goes directly to education.
*HAVE YOU BEEN CONCERNED ABOUT THE TEACHER SHORTAGE?...The state had a shortage of 889 teaching positions in the 2006-07 school year! If every teacher taught 6 classes, that’s 5,334 classes taught by less than highly qualified teachers each day in the state of West Virginia!
*WHY CAN'T WE KEEP OUR TEACHERS?...After the Recht Decision in 1982, all teacher salaries were standardized across the state, NO MATTER WHAT THE COST OF LIVING IS! This does not allow for salary incentives in areas unable to recruit and retain certified teachers.
